Pastor Hayward was born into a Ministry family and he is a fourth generation preacher who grew up in the AME Church.   He was a child of the parsonage whose father, Samuel Hayward, was an AME Pastor in the Bermuda Conference of the First Episcopal District.  As a child, he was nurtured and trained as a youth lay leader at Vernon Temple AMEC in Southampton, Bermuda.  In 1970 he was licensed as a local preacher also at Vernon Temple AMEC in Southampton, Bermuda.  Moreover, it was in the North Carolina Conference in 1974 that he was ordained as an itinerant elder by Bishop Henry Wendell Murph.  This past year he celebrated 35 years in the Ministry.

Pastor Hayward has served God and the church in many capacities since his ordination in 1975. He has served as chief secretary of the Virginia Conference for 15 years, served as treasurer of the Baltimore Conference, served on the Board of Examiners in four of the conferences of the Second Episcopal District, consecutively since 1978. Additionally, he was elected eight times to the General Conference and, he served as a Member of the Connectional Council of the A.M.E. Church.  He is Charter member of the Hampton Roads Ministerial Alliance, immediate past president of the Baltimore Ministerial Alliance and he is currently a member of the Collective Banking Group that is located in the Washington Metropolitan area.

Pastor Hayward completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Kittrell College, Hampton University, Trinity Theological Seminary, and the University of Miami where he received certification in Drug Abuse Counseling.

He has held several leadership positions including the following:  He is a Past President of the NAACP in Accomack County, Virginia; a Member of Kiwanis Clubs International; a member of the Elks Lodge, IBPOE; and a member of  Macedonia Lodge #19 of the Free and Accepted Masons.  He is also a former hospital chaplain of the E.S. Memorial Hospital and former president of the Board of Director, Delmarva Rural Ministries.

Pastor Hayward has nurtured more than 30 sons and daughters in the Ministry. Of those, two are college deans, one is a Baptist Bishop, and seven are full time pastors.  He constantly nurtures and encourages ministers in training through the board of examiners and in the local church. He has spiritually fathered many ministers of the Gospel and has a particular gift of counseling with ministers who are broken and in need of loving support.  He has mentored and nurtured numerous lay leaders throughout the Second Episcopal District.  He has supported several persons through local, conference, district and connectional offices.  He has supported and trained laity in every pastoral charge with special emphasis on the involvement and the development of leadership among the youth and young adult members.

Pastor Hayward has initiated and supported many ministries and programs at all of his pastorates.  He initiated “Stay Up While You’re Out!”-- an innovative, faith-based tutoring and restorative program for young people suspended from school.  This program provided daily instruction and character enhancement classes which were taught at selected churches in the community. He began Weekly/Monthly Nursing Home Ministries and Prison/Jail Ministries in Virginia and in Maryland.  He is a builder of congregations--family by family and has initiated Married Couples Ministries in each pastorate. He has also supported and endorsed Singles, Men’s and Women’s Ministries, and church-school partnerships.

Pastor Hayward is a loving husband to Reverend Althea J. Hayward and a caring father to Kimberly and Kristina Hayward.  He is the eldest of six siblings, all of whom are ministers, and all of whom are married to ministers.  He is a dynamic, Spirit-filled Preacher of the Gospel and is a committed, loving pastor, faithful friend, and brother.

More than all of the above, Pastor Hayward is a child of God who is committed to and excited about preaching and teaching God’s Word.
